From the Stage to Yum Yum World: Steve Turner’s Creative Journey

Steve Turner’s work as a singing teacher is part of a much longer creative story—one shaped by theatre, songwriting, youth work, performance, recording and the belief that music can help people find confidence and connection.

Learning through performance

In 1985, Steve toured Australia with the theatre production Regardless as part of the International Youth Year. The production combined acting, music, dance, mime and circus skills to explore the experiences of young people.

Life on the road demanded discipline, teamwork and the ability to communicate with different audiences. Over the ten-month tour, the production reached approximately 100,000 people. Those experiences became part of the practical understanding Steve now brings to performers and developing singers.

Songwriting and work with young people

Steve’s songwriting has often grown from real lives and conversations. His work with young people reinforced the importance of listening—both musically and personally—and of creating space for people to express what they may struggle to say directly.

A newspaper profile from his recording years described how experiences in youth work contributed inspiration for his songs. That same thread continues through his approach to teaching: technique matters, but so do the person, the story and the reason they want to sing.

Building Yum Yum World

Yum Yum World grew from Steve’s combination of musical imagination and creative entrepreneurship. The project brought together original characters, songs, storytelling, voices, performance and visual art in a world designed for children and families.

Yum Yum World’s official About page describes Steve as its founder and the musician, singer and entrepreneur behind the vision. It also acknowledges the creative support of his wife Julie and contributions from family members and a wider team of performers, artists, voices, animators and collaborators.

That collaboration is central to the project. Julie contributed musical and design ideas, helped write songs and gave voice to a lead character. Jesse Turner contributed artistic direction and visual creativity. Other collaborators helped bring characters to life through acting, dance, narration, animation and translation.

The connection to teaching

The stage, the studio and Yum Yum World may look like different chapters, but they share a common purpose: helping an idea become something people can experience.

In singing lessons, that may mean helping someone move beyond imitation and discover how a song works in their own voice. In songwriting, it means finding the words, melody and arrangement that carry an idea. In a collaborative project, it means recognising what each person can contribute.
